I have always loved Mercer Mayer’s little critter books and was so happy to find a Christmas story in the collection! In this story, Critter tells us about all the things he’s trying to do for his parents around Christmas … critter makes a wreath, helps with baking, picks out THE BEST Christmas tree, and helps to decorate … he even puts himself to bed early on Christmas Eve, leaving a special note to Santa about how good he’s been. My favorite: "I wanted to wrap the baby's present just for you, but the tape was too sticky." It is a fact, by the way, that I was banned from using tape! My thoughts: I love and adore Little Critter. But, as you'd expect, things don't always go according to plan. Premise/plot: Little Critter tries really hard to make Christmas really, truly special for his Mom and Dad. I wanted to find a Christmas present just for you, but there were too many toys to look at. I wanted to decorate some Christmas cookies just for you, but I couldn't stop tasting them.

I give Merry Christmas, Mom and Dad two and a half stars, and fondly recommend it for anyone excited over the coming of Christmas and all that it means. This is Mercer Mayer at or near his best as an illustrator, and it's wonderful. The full-page nighttime scene with Santa Claus and his reindeer flying overhead as Little Critter sleeps cozily tucked in bed upstairs is a lovely panorama, worth pausing over for a minute or two in appreciation of its simple, serene beauty. Mercer Mayer was always a good artist, but his talents sparkle particularly in Merry Christmas, Mom and Dad. It's a merry Christmas for everyone in the Critter family.
